The Homeway has been a landmark eatery at the corner of Erskine & Mt. Pleasant since 1948 when John Flora started the business with the help of his wife Petra and his daughter Nicki. In 1960 John turned the business over to his daughter Nicki and her husband, Mike, who operated it for 46 years. During that period of time, the Homeway catered primarily to the students at Northern Secondary School.

Mike and Nicki became loved and respected by many generations of students. During the week and on the weekends the Homeway became well known in the neighbourhood for its breakfasts. The Homeway also became a meeting place for a variety of politicians, professional athletes, police officers, taxi drivers and city workers. It is even rumoured that in the evenings when the drapes were drawn, there was an occasional card game.
In 2005, Nicki finally decided to hang up her apron and turned the business over to the next generation. For those of you who knew the Homeway during the Mike & Nicki days, you will notice a huge difference in the restaurant. With the help of designer Robin DeGroot , who you may recognize from the television series Restaurant Makeover, the Homeway has been completely renovated and transformed into a modern urban diner.
